CarradaleCarradale is situated on the East Coast of Kintyre along the B842, 16 miles north of Campbeltown. It has plenty of things to see and do. Accommodation and places to eat are of a high standard and a warm welcome awaits all visitors. In the 17th and 18th centuries there were small communities of crofters and fishermen all around Carradale. Although lacking a harbour, the three bays on the coastline provided adequate shelter. In the 19th century the Firth of Clyde came into its own. The introduction of steam transformed Kintyre and from the 1830s until the Second World War daily steamers went from Campbeltown to Glasgow, calling at Carradale. Carradale’s first pier was built in 1858, and with the herring industry thriving, another opportunity opened up - the holiday trade. This pattern persisted until the Second World War, with the hotels developing and a tradition of families returning year after year. Now the pattern is changing back again. Carradale still has a fishing fleet - largely catching shellfish.
