The village of Glenbarr is just off the A83 12 miles from Campbeltown but it is worth a visit to Glenbarr Abbey. These are the lands of the Macalisters of Glenbarr. Glenbarr Abbey is a glimpse of family living in a beautiful 18th century house, with 19th century fashions, family jewelry, a unique thimble collection, wonderful patchworks and gloves worn by Mary Queen of Scots.
Tours around the house are conducted by the Laird Angus Macalister and his wife Jeanne Macalister, Lady Glenbarr. The abbey is situated in grounds with riverside and woodland walks, and facilities include a museum, gift shop, teas and Coffees, picnic facilities, and free parking.
Walkers can continue up to Barr Glen to the ridge of Kintyre to climb Beinn an Turc 1,490 ft (454 m) the highest hill in Kintyre.
