Historical interestGauldrans - OS Grid NR624198South of the wireless mast is the bay known as the Gauldrans which has strange rock formations and a sandy beach. A mile further on along a coastal path is the deserted settlement of Craigaig with ruins of cottages and farm buildings of several periods can be seen here. Between here and the Mull of Kintyre was a string of isolated settlements which were joined together by a cart trail which still can be found today in parts, but can get rather overgrown in the summer. Access to Craigaig can be found by walking along the cliff edge . Iron Age Hill Forts - OS Grid NR682259-NR731223From the period 850BC to AD200 the hills around the Laggan were protected by a series of hill forts. Largiemore, Ranachan Hill, Ballywilline Hill and Knock Scalbert are all worth a visit. On the south side the fort on Bealloch Hill guards the pass to Southend from were it takes its name. From all these sites there are spectacular views over the flat land of the Laggan. Kilkivan Chapel - OS Grid NR652202Kilkivan Chapel is where the Campbeltown Cross originated and was taken to the town in the 17th century to serve as a market cross. |
