Machrihanish

Machrihanish is a small village 5 1/2 miles (9 km) by car from Campbeltown along the B843. The village has an award winning beach which goes all the way to Westport. There is the famous Machrihanish Golf Course, Seabird & Wildlife Observatory, camping and great sunsets to see.

The Laggan, is a triangular area of low lying land bounded by Machrihanish to the west Westport to the north and Campbeltown to the east. At the end of the last Ice Age the area was flooded by sea water. After the water receded, what was left was dense scrub land with good drainage but boggy. The period after the climate change of 1200 BC changed the area again to became marshes and peat banks. The Laggan has now been drained and provides very fertile land for grazing dairy cattle and producing crops. Large numbers of birds stay in this area all year, including: Greenland and White-fronted Geese, Pink Footed and Barnacle Geese, Kingfisher, Marsh Harrier and the Wood Sandpiper.
