Sanda Island

Sanda Island is a privately owned island of 400 acres situated near the Mull of Kintyre. Although only two miles from the mainland it is supplied by boat from Campbeltown.

Sanda boasts a safe anchorage for visiting yachts during the summer months. During the last few years, visitors to the Island have increased substantially, as letting cottages have become available. Further development has taken place and in 2003 the establishment of Scotland's fourth official Bird Observatory took place and the opening of the Byron Darnton pub. You can also visit the stunning ship lighthouse, built by Alan Stevenson, and the ancient chapel dedicated to St Ninian

The Island was accorded a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in 1995, acknowledging its importance in both the breeding and migratory aspects of its bird population. The bird observatory main function is to record and ring the birds with the object of relating local distributions and movements to a national perspective.

The Seren Las the supply vessel for Sanda Island is based in Campbeltown at the Old Quay. All visitors are taken to Sanda subject to suitable weather. The journey time is normally an hour and departure times will vary depending on the tides.

Trips to Sanda are at 3 days a week, rising to a daily service in the summer months.

Boat trips by Kintyre Marine Charters.
