Walks

Davaar Island - OS NR757203

Allow 3-5 hours - Click on image for detailed map

This walk begins at the Doirlinn a shingle bar linking the island and the mainland. The bar is tidal, information on safe times to cross are available from the Tourist Information Centre. The main attraction for visiting the island is the cave painting. When you come off the Doirlinn, follow the shore to the right, there is a track along the forshore all the way to the cliff bottom. At the end of the track stands a ruined cottage known as Sheep House. The main water supply on the island – a well - is there. On the foreshore below the ruin can be found a kelp-kiln, a narrow stone-enclosed pit, much overgrown in which seaweed was burned for the manufacture of kelp. Kelp burning was an important cottage industry in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Start from Campbeltown or from the track beside Glenramskill House. Go uphill towards Low Glenramskill farm. Follow the diversion around the MoD fence to rejoin the old road up and over the hill, past the small reservoir, contouring along the hill before dropping down to join the road known locally as Leerside. Turn left and follow the road along the shore, all the way back to the start. Near the highest point you may be able to see the reduced remains of a hill fort, which was once an important spot on the col between the coast and Campbeltown Loch.
